Three officials of the Lagos State House of Assembly have formally apologized to the Department of State Services (DSS) following an altercation that led to the physical assault of security operatives during a recent crisis at the Assembly complex.
The apology, issued in letters addressed to DSS Director General Adeola Ajayi, aims to mend relations between the legislative staff and the nation’s foremost intelligence agency.
The incident, which occurred in February 2025, reportedly stemmed from a leadership tussle within the Assembly, leading to chaotic scenes in which DSS officials were allegedly manhandled by aggrieved staff members. Following the incident, Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa also extended an official apology, emphasizing the need for better cooperation between security agencies and legislative institutions.
In a statement, the assaulted DSS officers expressed their disappointment over the treatment they received while on duty, but the agency has since accepted the apologies, signaling a possible resolution to the dispute. However, political analysts warn that such incidents highlight deeper issues of power struggles within Nigeria’s state governments, calling for institutional reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
