In a recent assessment, the World Bank has expressed concern over Nigeria's statistical system, noting that it lags behind those of comparable nations such as Brazil and South Africa. The evaluation underscores the critical role of robust statistical data in informing policy decisions and driving sustainable development.

Johan Mistiaen, a representative of the World Bank, presented findings indicating that Nigeria's statistical infrastructure requires significant enhancement to meet international standards. He advocated for an annual investment ranging between $10 million and $15 million to elevate the country's statistical performance to align with its aspirational peers.

In response, the Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the nation's statistical systems. The Minister of Finance emphasized the importance of accurate and timely data in formulating effective policies and assured continued support for the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The government also acknowledged the World Bank's ongoing financial and technical assistance, recognizing its pivotal role in enhancing the country's statistical capabilities.

The Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, highlighted recent strides made by the NBS, including increased budgetary allocations and efforts to improve data collection methodologies. He emphasized that bolstering the statistical system is essential for tracking progress, allocating resources efficiently, and achieving national development goals.

Investing in Nigeria's statistical infrastructure is not merely a technical endeavor but a strategic imperative. Enhanced statistical data will provide a solid foundation for evidence-based policymaking, facilitate international comparisons, and attract investment by showcasing a commitment to transparency and accountability.

As Nigeria aspires to strengthen its position on the global stage, prioritizing the development of a robust statistical system will be instrumental in driving informed decisions and fostering sustainable growth.
