Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has revealed his willingness to step down from the 2027 race if a more competent and credible candidate emerges within the party. Speaking in an exclusive interview, Adebayo emphasized that his political ambition is secondary to Nigeria’s overall progress.

“I am in politics to serve the people, not to serve myself. If another candidate comes forward who is better positioned to take the country in the right direction, I will fully support them. This is about Nigeria, not personal ambition,” he stated.

Adebayo, a seasoned lawyer and political analyst, played a significant role in SDP’s resurgence during the last general election. However, despite his growing influence, he maintains that Nigeria’s leadership should be about capability and selflessness rather than personal interest.

Political analysts believe Adebayo’s statement signals a strategic approach to party unity and positioning ahead of the 2027 elections. The SDP, which has struggled to compete against the two dominant parties, APC and PDP, might benefit from an early consensus-building approach.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, SDP is expected to intensify its search for a formidable candidate who can unite its members and offer Nigerians a viable alternative to the existing political structures.
