The tragic incident involving Adetunji "Teejay" Opayele, co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa, has elicited widespread mourning within the tech community and the general public.
Opayele, aged 32, was involved in a fatal accident on March 4, 2025, while riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos. The driver responsible, identified as Biola Adams-Odutayo, reportedly struck Opayele and allegedly prioritized preventing bloodstains in her vehicle over providing immediate assistance.
Eyewitnesses recounted that Adams-Odutayo initially refused to transport the injured Opayele to the hospital, expressing concern about blood staining her car. After persistent pleading from bystanders, she eventually agreed to take him to a hospital. However, upon arrival, the hospital declined to admit Opayele due to the severity of his injuries. He was subsequently taken to another medical facility, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on March 5.
The incident has ignited widespread outrage, with many calling for justice and highlighting the need for prompt medical attention in accident cases. A petition demanding accountability for Opayele's death has garnered significant support, reflecting the public's demand for action against reckless driving and the importance of compassionate response in emergencies.
Opayele's untimely demise is a profound loss to Nigeria's tech industry. Under his technical leadership, Bumpa has facilitated over 200,000 transactions and empowered numerous small and medium-sized enterprises across the country. His vision and dedication were instrumental in advancing technological solutions for Nigerian businesses.
