The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has acknowledged and accepted the Supreme Court's ruling that affirmed Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the duly elected Governor of Ondo State. This decision brings to a close the legal contestation surrounding the governorship election in the state.
The 2020 Ondo State gubernatorial election was contested, with the PDP challenging the election results on grounds of alleged irregularities. The case progressed through various levels of the judiciary, culminating in the Supreme Court's verdict.
On July 28, 2021, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court upheld the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Ondo State Election Petitions Tribunal, dismissing the PDP's petition. The majority opinion stated that while the PDP may have raised valid concerns, procedural issues, such as the failure to name certain parties in the appeal, necessitated the dismissal.
Following the Supreme Court's judgment, the PDP in Ondo State has expressed its acceptance of the ruling. The party acknowledges that the decision puts an end to the legal disputes regarding the governorship election and has expressed its commitment to moving forward in the interest of the state's development.
