The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified following the recommendation by the party's National Disciplinary Committee (NDC), chaired by Chief Tom Ikimi, to expel National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu over alleged anti-party activities.

The turmoil traces back to Anyanwu's candidacy in the November 2024 Imo State governorship election, during which he temporarily vacated his position as National Secretary. Post-election, Anyanwu sought to reclaim his role, leading to internal disputes and legal battles within the party. The Court of Appeal in Enugu had previously affirmed Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary, following Anyanwu's departure to contest the governorship election.

The PDP Young Generation Caucus filed a petition accusing Anyanwu of breaching party rules and threatening violence. The group's legal director, Alex Ter Adum, argued that Anyanwu's conduct violated Article 58 of the PDP Constitution, citing communications to law enforcement agencies that allegedly threatened internal party chaos.

In response to these allegations, the Ikimi-led NDC convened to address the issues. Despite invitations, Anyanwu was absent from the proceedings, citing an ongoing Supreme Court case concerning his status within the party. He informed the committee that discussing matters related to his office would be sub judice.

The recommendation has sparked strong reactions, particularly from allies of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a prominent figure within the PDP. Kola Ologbondiyan, former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP and an ally of Wike, warned that if Anyanwu succeeds in his appeal at the Supreme Court, it could signify the final takeover of the PDP by the All Progressives Congress (APC) through Wike's influence.

Ologbondiyan expressed concerns about the potential implications for the party's structure and unity, stating that such a development could affect the foundation of the PDP.

The situation remains fluid, with the final decision pending the NEC's consideration of the NDC's recommendation and the outcome of Anyanwu's appeal to the Supreme Court. The unfolding events are poised to have significant implications for the PDP's internal dynamics, leadership structure, and overall cohesion as Nigeria approaches critical electoral milestones.

The party's ability to navigate this crisis will be crucial in determining its future trajectory and effectiveness as a political force in the country.
