The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government and telecommunications companies, demanding an immediate reversal of the recent increase in telecom tariffs. NANS has threatened to mobilize students across the country for mass protests if their demands are not met promptly.
In a joint statement, NANS officials Comrade Anzaku Shedrack Ovye and Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi condemned the tariff hike, emphasizing that it imposes an additional financial burden on students and the general populace during a period of economic hardship. They described the increase as an affront to the well-being of Nigerian citizens and a violation of the fundamental principle that communication services should be affordable and accessible to all.
The student body has called for immediate action from the government and telecom operators to revert to the previous tariff rates. They argue that affordable communication is essential for education and daily life, and the recent hike undermines these necessities. NANS has vowed to continue advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and citizens, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the interests of the people in policy decisions affecting essential services.
