The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its fight against smuggling, announcing the interception of contraband goods valued at approximately ₦1.7 billion in a large-scale operation conducted by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ in Lagos.
During the operation, customs officers seized numerous smuggled items, including exotic vehicles, foreign parboiled rice, used clothing, and other prohibited goods brought into the country through illegal channels. The FOU Zone 'A' Commander disclosed that six suspects were arrested in connection with the smuggling activities and are currently undergoing investigation.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing, the Customs leadership reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring Nigeria's borders remain secure. The agency also emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward economic sabotage, noting that smuggling not only affects local industries but also poses a security risk.
The NCS has called on Nigerians to support efforts aimed at curbing illegal trade by reporting suspicious activities and avoiding patronage of smuggled goods. Meanwhile, all confiscated items are expected to be auctioned according to customs regulations, with the proceeds remitted to the government treasury.
