A Lagos High Court has scheduled March 17, 2025, for the hearing of a lawsuit filed by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, against his former deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, and several others. The suit, which has drawn significant public and political attention, stems from an internal leadership tussle that has rocked the Lagos Assembly in recent weeks.

Obasa, who has been at the helm of the Assembly for multiple terms, initiated the legal action following what he described as coordinated attempts to undermine his leadership. Meranda, a prominent female legislator, was removed as deputy speaker under controversial circumstances, with allegations of political maneuvering and internal dissent within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to sources close to the matter, Obasa is seeking legal redress over what he claims to be defamatory statements and unlawful actions taken against him by his opponents within the Assembly. The suit also names other legislators and political figures said to have played roles in the events leading up to the internal power struggle.

Legal experts predict a heated court battle, as Meranda and her allies are expected to challenge the claims, arguing that their actions were in line with democratic principles and the need for accountability in leadership. The case is also expected to test the extent of the Assembly’s internal authority versus the judicial oversight of legislative disputes.

As the court prepares to hear the arguments from both sides, political analysts suggest that the outcome could have lasting implications for legislative stability in Lagos State. With the APC already navigating internal conflicts ahead of the next election cycle, the lawsuit could further deepen divisions within the party’s structure in the state.
