Major General Maharazu Tsiga (retired), a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been released from captivity after spending 22 harrowing days in the hands of bandits.

His release brings an end to a period of intense concern and anxiety for his family, friends, and the nation. General Tsiga was abducted from his residence in Tsiga village, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, on February 6th, 2025. The abduction, carried out by a group of heavily armed bandits, was marked by violence, with reports indicating that several individuals sustained injuries during the raid.

During his captivity, there were reports that the bandits, led by a notorious bandit kingpin known as Babaro, had demanded a substantial ransom for his release. While it has been confirmed that the bandits asked for 250 million naira, it is currently unclear whether any ransom was paid.

Following his release, General Tsiga is receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital. Security measures are in place to ensure his safety.

The incident had prompted a swift response from security agencies, with the military launching search-and-rescue operations in the forested areas of Katsina State. The Katsina State Police Command, along with other security agencies, were also involved in efforts to secure his release.

This incident highlights the persistent security challenges facing many regions of Nigeria, particularly in the northwest, where banditry and kidnapping have become increasingly prevalent. The safe return of General Tsiga provides a measure of relief, but also underscores the ongoing need for concerted efforts to address the root causes of insecurity in the country.
