The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated that tuberculosis (TB) is a medical condition caused by bacterial infection, specifically by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and not by spiritual forces or curses. This clarification aims to dispel prevalent myths and encourage individuals exhibiting symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
Dr. Urhioke Ochuko, Deputy Director of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, emphasized that TB is a curable disease, and the government provides free screening and treatment services in public health facilities nationwide. He urged the public to utilize these services and avoid attributing the disease to supernatural causes, which can delay effective treatment and lead to unnecessary complications.
This initiative is part of a broader public health campaign to increase awareness about TB, reduce stigma associated with the disease, and improve treatment outcomes by ensuring timely medical intervention.
