Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has been handed a suspended prison sentence following his conviction for assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton. The incident occurred on June 2, 2021, at their residence in Kew, southwest London.
During an altercation, Barton physically assaulted his wife, resulting in a head injury. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Mrs. Barton was treated for a head wound. Barton was subsequently arrested and charged with assault by beating. At Wimbledon Magistrates' Court, Barton pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to ten weeks in prison, suspended for one year.
Additionally, he was ordered to perform 200 hours of unpaid community service and pay a £1,000 fine, along with £800 in court costs. The court also imposed a restraining order, prohibiting Barton from contacting his wife directly or indirectly for a period of one year.
In delivering the sentence, District Judge Andrew Sweet emphasized the seriousness of domestic violence and noted that Barton's actions had caused significant harm. Barton, who has a history of on-field aggression and previous legal issues, expressed remorse for his actions and stated his intention to seek professional help to address his behavior.
