The political atmosphere in Edo State has taken a dramatic turn as opposition parties have accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, of allegedly attempting to lure lawmakers from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with a staggering N1.6 billion in cash inducements.
According to a statement released by the Edo PDP, Okpebholo is allegedly using financial incentives to convince PDP legislators to switch allegiance ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election. The party claims that such actions undermine democratic principles and weaken the integrity of the political process.
“Democracy should be about ideology and service to the people, not about financial transactions. We strongly condemn any attempts to manipulate lawmakers with monetary incentives,” a PDP spokesperson said.
However, Okpebholo has denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. In his response, he challenged his accusers to provide concrete evidence to support their claims.
“I have always believed in winning elections based on merit, policies, and the will of the people. This is nothing but a smear campaign by those who feel threatened by my growing acceptance among Edo people,” Okpebholo stated.
The allegations have further heightened political tensions in Edo State as parties continue their campaigns ahead of the gubernatorial election. Analysts warn that if such accusations persist, it could lead to further polarization of the political landscape and increase voter apathy.
