The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced strong opposition to the recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld the death sentence of a farmer convicted of killing a herdsman. CAN's leadership expressed deep concern over the verdict, arguing that it sets a concerning precedent, especially considering the complex dynamics between farmers and herdsmen in various regions of the country.

In an official statement, CAN emphasized the need for the judiciary to consider the broader context of self-defense and the protection of one's livelihood. The association highlighted that many farmers have faced threats to their lives and properties due to clashes with herdsmen, and in some instances, have had to defend themselves under dire circumstances.

CAN called for a more nuanced approach to such cases, urging the judiciary to take into account the prevailing security challenges and the imperative for individuals to protect themselves when law enforcement is unable to provide timely intervention. The association also appealed to the government to implement more robust measures to address the root causes of farmer-herdsman conflicts, promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among all communities.
