In a move aimed at decongesting correctional facilities, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Justice Ekaette Obot has ordered the release of 55 inmates from various prisons across the state. This initiative reflects the judiciary's commitment to upholding justice while addressing the challenges of overcrowded prisons.
The Chief Judge conducted visits to several correctional centers, reviewing cases of inmates who had been detained for extended periods without trial or those held for minor offenses. After thorough assessments, 55 inmates were granted freedom based on considerations such as the nature of their alleged crimes, duration of detention, and behavior during incarceration.
This action aligns with ongoing efforts to reform the criminal justice system, ensuring that individuals are not unjustly deprived of their liberty and that correctional facilities operate within capacity. The Chief Judge emphasized the need for continuous collaboration among the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to expedite the administration of justice and implement alternative dispute resolution mechanisms where appropriate.
The released individuals have been advised to reintegrate positively into society and avoid actions that could lead to reoffending. Community support systems and rehabilitation programs are expected to play crucial roles in facilitating their successful reintegration.
