The Imo State government has declared a decisive campaign against the burgeoning use and distribution of hard drugs, with a specific focus on nightclubs and hotels within the Owerri metropolis.

This initiative signals a strong stance against illicit activities that have raised significant concerns among state officials.

The government's move comes in response to increasing reports of drug peddling and related criminal activities, prompting a mobilization of security forces to restore order. According to statements released by government officials, a key component of this operation involves targeting establishments where drug use is suspected to be prevalent.

"The Imo State government has read a riot act to hoteliers and operators of nightclubs to desist from enabling the use of hard drugs on their premises," stated Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring.

Concerns have been raised regarding the open sale and consumption of drugs, particularly cannabis, in public spaces, including lounges and nightclubs. The government has made it clear that such activities will no longer be tolerated.

The government urges all lounge and nightclub owners to cooperate with the government in this effort and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.
